Methane emissions from energy sector near record high

The International Energy Agency’s Global Methane Tracker has revealed that large methane plumes from leaky fossil fuel infrastructure jumped by 50 per cent in 2023 compared with 2022. However, the International Energy Agency is optimistic that new satellites will help improve monitoring and transparency around methane leaks.

State-owned logging business VicForests, previously found to have breached threatened species laws, will cease to exist from June 30 this year. The development comes after native forest logging ended in Victoria on January 1st, and the company stopped managing community forestry on February 5th due to concerns around litigation risks and associated taxpayer costs.

Renewable energy developers have told the NSW government to slash the buffer zone between giant wind farms and nearby communities in a bid to fast-track a rollout of green electricity as fears grow over Australia failing to keep pace with an ambitious 2030 goal.
