Australia signs treaty with climate change impacted Tuvalu

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a new pact with the low-lying island country of Tuvalu, allowing residents facing displacement the ability to resettle in Australia.  The agreement comes as Tuvalu's viability is threatened by rising sea levels caused by escalating climate change, with the country even flagging a potential move into the digital world. 

A federal court has heard expert evidence on how Torres Strait Islanders could face increased mortality as a result of temperature rises associated with climate change. This evidence is being heard as part of Elders Pabai Pabai and Paul Kabai’s class action challenging Australia’s lack of climate action, with the hearing set to continue today in Melbourne.

And the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has predicted a 90% likelihood of the El Nino weather pattern staying around for six months through to April 2024, bringing forward a scorching summer in a year that is already on track to be the hottest on record.
