Australia not pulling its weight on climate finance

Australia is only funding one-tenth of its fair share of climate finance globally, according to a new Oxfam and ActionAid report which calls on the country to immediately increase its climate finance commitments from $400 million to $3 billion ahead of COP27 in November.

It comes as former Pacific leaders urge Australia to stop digging up, exporting, and burning fossil fuels in order to help save vulnerable Pacific nations, many of which are facing existential threats.

While EV sales almost tripled in 2021, fossil-fuel powered SUVs accounted for half of all new car sales, according to a new report. With transport accounting for about 18 per cent of Australia’s carbon emissions, it’s time for a strong fuel efficiency standard to get Australia moving on clean cars.

‘Wake-up call’: SUV sales cancel carbon savings from electric cars

The latest report on light vehicle emissions intensity by the National Transport Commission shows that average carbon pollution from new cars sold in Australia fell just 2 per cent in 2021.
