Victorian storms show need for a national energy resilience solution

The Victorian government has warned of the need for a national solution in support of energy resilience after destructive winds tore down transmission towers and blew trees onto power lines, leaving almost 130,000 homes without electricity over a day later and with many still facing a week without power or internet.

Meanwhile researchers say poor urban design is creating pockets of heat and humidity in Brisbane. The same is true in Melbourne where the city’s hottest areas house the most at-risk residents. An urban heat expert says that we are systematically developing inequitable cities in terms of resilience to heat - the biggest killer when it comes to natural disasters.

And conservation groups are celebrating after a picture of a brushtail possum was captured in a part of Western Australia where the animals have not been seen for nearly a century.
