Victorians evacuate amid extreme fire danger

An evacuation warning was issued for 28 communities in rural Victoria last night, amid an out-of-control blaze that 1,000 firefighters have been attempting to control. No properties had yet been reported as damaged, and the fire caused the closure of a major highway.

The National Health and Medical Research Council is reviewing guidelines about what Australians should eat to meet nutritional requirements, and will be taking into account the importance of sustainable diets with low environmental impacts, something which has the red meat industry concerned.

A program to re-introduce the critically endangered brush-tailed bettong to a special conservation area in the Pilliga State Forest of NSW has doubled their numbers and saved the species from the brink of extinction. The marsupial subspecies has been extinct in the state and along the east coast for more than a century.
