The operators of Australia's grid say we could be mostly renewable powered by 2025

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has released its Electricity Statement of Opportunities today, and it’s a doozy - amongst the findings are that renewables could provide 100% of Australia’s electricity demand at certain times by 2025, that rooftop solar could provide up to 77% of daytime electricity supply in the National Electricity Market by 2026 and that renewables backed by batteries will provide a stable electricity supply as ageing coal-burning power stations are finally put to bed.

It begs the question: why exactly does Scott Morrison want us to pay to subsidise coal power?

In other good news, we have one less toxic fume to worry about as leaded petrol has finally been phased out worldwide, and Canberrans are amongst the country’s most climate-concerned citizens.

Renewables could meet 100% demand in Australia at certain times of day by 2025, report says
Energy market operator notes penetration of renewable generation reached record high of 57% twice in 2021

Even 1.5C warming will still leave world’s coasts exposed to extremes
One-in-100-year extreme sea-level events along the world’s coastal regions will become annual occurrences by the end of the century even if the most ambitious climate change action is taken

Clean energy, less fuel use cut emissions
Fewer jets in the air, vehicles on the road and cleaner energy have helped cut Australia's greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate survey: Canberrans among nation's strongest climate action advocates
Almost eight in 10 voters in inner-city Canberra believe the Morrison government needs to do more to tackle climate change.

AEMO’s new reliability forecasts give lie to Taylor’s Coalkeeper campaign
The Australian Energy Market Operator has forecast a vastly improved outlook for reliability over the next five years, and suggested that the biggest single risk is a major weather event – namely flooding – to the Yallourn  brown coal generator in Victoria.
