Millions of hectares of ocean identified for seaweed, could reduce land needed for farming

Written by Greenpeace Australia Pacific | Thursday, 26 January 2023

Scientists have identified a 110 million hectare patch of ocean suitable for seaweed cultivation in Indonesia and Australia. The study, published in Nature Sustainability, looked at 34 seaweed species and where they could feasibly grow. Researchers suggest cuts to methane emissions from using seaweed in human diets could save 2.6bn tonnes of CO2-equivalent a year by 2050.

Researchers are looking at the impact climate change has on our sleep. A new study has revealed without adequate emissions reductions, Australians could lose up to two weeks of sleep every year by the end of the century.

Drivers in New South Wales will be offered the option to offset their carbon emissions when paying their rego. The announcement comes as the Perrottet Government prepares for the upcoming state election.
