Labor threatens to dump climate bill

Parliament is set to debate the Albanese government’s climate bill after the signature bill and supporting legislation was introduced yesterday. But Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen has also threatened the government will walk away from the legislation if it can't find broader support for the proposed law.

Majority of animals caught in shark nets last year were threatened or protected species

More than 200 threatened or protected animals were caught in shark nets in the state over the past 12 months, renewing the calls from experts to ditch the devices. Of the 376 animals caught in NSW nets in the past financial year, only 51 were targeted shark species and 203 were threatened or protected species, including sharks, turtles and rays. Of these animals, 156 died, data from the NSW Department of Primary Industries shows.

Sydney residents claim victory over plans for waste incinerator

Residents in Sydney's eastern suburbs are claiming victory after a three-year battle to stop a waste incinerator from being built on their doorstep. The facility would harvest energy from what was incinerated and expel what was left from a 60-metre chimney towering over Matraville homes.

Endangered parrots relocated to establish new population

Researchers and volunteers have successfully relocated seven western ground parrots in an effort to boost population numbers of the critically endangered species. Western ground parrots are regarded as Australia’s rarest bird species, with wild populations previously only existing in Cape Arid National Park and the adjacent Nuytsland Nature Reserve east of Esperance.
