# Greens call for disaster recovery to be funded by fossil fuel tax

The Greens are pushing for disaster payments to be doubled to $2,000, with the increase funded by a tax on coal and gas companies as fossil fuels drive the climate change fuelling extreme weather events.
NSW premier Dominic Perrottet may have spun "one-in-1,000-year" headlines, but scientists say this misleads the public about the probability of such disasters recurring with the climate crisis further loading the dice.
Independent MP Zali Steggall has announced a five-step plan for an “orderly transition” to 80 per cent renewable energy by 2030 and net zero by 2050, including targeted support for more renewables, electric vehicles, and green manufacturing.
