Government plans to protect massive area off Macquarie Island

An area roughly the size of Germany is set to be added to Australia's protected marine zones, safeguarding the future of millions of penguins, seals and sea birds on Macquarie Island.

Greenpeace Australia Pacific’s analysis of 212 submissions to the National Electric Vehicle Strategy consultation has revealed that 73 per cent of all groups supported the introduction of a fuel efficiency standard, and none opposed the measure. 

Twenty-nine Australian animal species – 15 mammals, four frogs, eight birds, one reptile and one fish – have pulled back from the brink of extinction to the extent they no longer meet the criteria for being listed as threatened, according to research published in the journal of Biological Conservation.
