Long-time forest advocates have expressed disgust at the ongoing logging of koala habitat in northern New South Wales despite promises the state government would protect the species, with one seasoned campaigner calling the destruction a “profound tragedy”. The concerns come ahead of a state koala summit in Sydney next Friday.

Communities are bracing for the severe Tropical Cyclone Megan, with destructive wind gusts of up to 220km/h expected to bring widespread damage, heavy rainfall and potential flooding to Northern Territory and Queensland coastal communities this week.

Australian sea lions risk extinction, but a proposed sanctuary zone in Western Australia may help save the species. The proposed park spans 1100km of southern WA coastline from east of Bremer Bay to the South Australian border, with public consultation on the plans open until June 16.
