Energy companies not cutting pollution fast enough

Written by Greenpeace Australia Pacific | Wednesday, 10 August 2022

90 per cent of major Australian electricity companies, including AGL, are failing to cut greenhouse gas emissions fast enough to meet the goals of the landmark Paris climate agreement, a study has found.

Australia’s main electricity market will prioritise cutting emissions as part of its objectives for the first time since its creation, a shift that could set up conditions for a carbon price, experts said.

NT government abandons plan to include mining industry in new environmental laws

A vast fenced-off area, 100 kilometres south of Darwin, was once the site of the Rum Jungle uranium mine, which supplied the United States and British nuclear programs during the Cold War. But almost 50 years since it closed, Rum Jungle has left a legacy of environmental damage so severe that it will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rehabilitate over the next decade.

Experts say the net zero concept is often used to delay taking action against emissions

There's a growing consensus on the urgent need to bring down carbon emissions, and the global rallying cry is net zero. This isn't just a climate target, it's become a badge of commitment. But a schism has emerged, with major environmental groups and several leading climate experts now washing their hands of the net zero concept.
