Australia ranks third for most new coal projects in the world

Australian companies are planning the most new coal mining projects after China and India, according to an analysis produced by the German environmental group Urgewald, which said it was the world’s most comprehensive public database on the coal industry.

After a torrential week in New South Wales, the State Emergency Service says more than 650 calls for help and 27 flood rescues in NSW were made in the 24 hours to Sunday Morning, with more flooding still to come.

BHP reckons it can and should extend a Queensland coal mine until the year 2116 in a move branded as “delusional” by the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility, which added, “it’s hard to imagine anyone had a straight face when they keyed those dates in”.
